A Functional Look At The Rise In Thyroid Disease

Have you noticed more and more people, especially women, are being labeled with thyroid disease. Thyroid cancer and hypothyroid diagnosis is rising so fast thyroid medications just recently became the most prescribed drug is the us.

While conventional medicine is quick to blame your age or genetics functional medicine stresses the inlet lying chase – which is well within your control.

According to Raphael Kellman, M.D., founder of the Kellman Center for Funcional and Integrative Medicine, thyroid disease is directly Connected to the microbiome, the bacteria within the intestines. These bacteria live in a delicate balance and any imbalances can set off a inflammatory reaction that interferes with your health and hormone balance.

An undiagnosed microbiome disorder may be the very reason one still feels terrible even while taking thyroid hormone replacement. If the microbiome isn’t being healed and strengthened, a thyroid condition may persist and eventually, if the immune and endocrine systems have had a recent trauma or the body has been exposed to significant toxin exposure, thyroid cancer cells may turn on.

In functional and integrative medicine, contrary to the conventional “American” medicine model, the emphasis is always on removing interferences with self-healing – with a major emphasis on healing the gut (intestines) and balancing the colonies of bacteria that live in the intestine. Before you jump to the conclusion that a daily probiotic is all it takes consider that You have 10-100 times the number of bacteria in your gut than you do human cells for your entire body. Technically you are more bacteria than human! Even the best probiotics have 10-14 strains and it’s been estimated that your intestines hold over 100 strains of bacteria with new strains being discovered daily.

In practical terms, when the bacteria that make up our microbiome are healthy and thriving, so are we. Dysbiosis, or imbalances and overgrowth of unfriendly strains of bacteria, can throw things off, contributing to health and immune issues — including cancer.

So, how did the imbalances happen?
The majority reason is our exposure to antibiotics as children and adults with no rebuilding protocols following the course of treatment. It’s been said that it can take up to 7 years for a micro- biome to reset itself naturally following just 1 round of antibiotics.

Consumption of non-organic animal proteins is another common way we are exposed to antibiotics – indirectly. Conventional farming and grain feeds results in unwanted illness in livestock which are often given antibiotics as prevention.

Other triggers for dysbiosis include the use of antacids, which destroys microbial populations by not allowing the digestive system to sterilize the food you swallow. Additionally, Environmental toxins, pesticides, heavy metal exposure, and chemicals in beauty and cleaning supplies also take a major toll

Everything you put in your mouth and swallow comes in contact with your microbiome and it can positively or negatively affect our health. Poor diets of sugary foods, refined carbs, GMOs, gluten, pesticides, and chemical additives cause pathogenic strains to flourish. Over time, the gut is weakened and disease manifests within the physical body.

We’re being hit with so many chemicals and toxins that simply didn’t exist generations ago. Parabens, carcinogens, heavy metals, and GMOs are all bombarding our bodies, and our immune and lymphatic systems can’t keep up!

Then add adrenal fatigue into the mix, which is affecting so many more men and women today because we have an unbelievable amount of added stress.

The second reason for the recent rise in thyroid disorders is its connection to emotion – more specifically the fear of communicating their needs and desires, feel unheard at work or in their relationships, or feel afraid to do what they really love and express themselves creatively.

Why does this matter when we are talking about the thyroid?
I have noticed in my practice that many women and men have manifested thyroid conditions because of a long pattern of not speaking up or feeling blocked creatively. Often, I’ve seen clients who were physically or emotionally abused and have held the trauma inside, afraid to speak up, and even repeating the same situations again, feeling unworthy of being heard, or asking for and receiving the love and support they truly desired.

Are you experiencing something similar? Have you noticed a slightly improvement your chiropractic with nutrition care, lifestyle shifts, even while reducing your medication, but you just can’t seem to feel 100 percent better?

Can you recognize any areas of struggle in your life where you’ve been unable to speak your ideas and truth with- out being judged, shamed, or criticized?

Do you find yourself allowing others to speak without expressing your voice because you are afraid of what they may say or how they may perceive you?

We are approaching a major shift in healthcare, one in which humanity is seeking truth about the cause of disease. Thyroid conditions and thyroid cancers have been showing up more and more frequently because we are being called upon to raise our awareness to the emotional connections to our bodily conditions. Our bodies are literally saying “Hey, this blockage here, I’m sick of you not being true to your emotions, I want you to finally speak up, it’s not OK to be silent about what has happening, it is time for you to clear the past emotional traumas and become who you were meant to be – a powerful, confident, healthy self!”

Your emotional health certainly helps shape the way your body functions, right down to a cellular level, and science is now catching up with what ancient medical modalities have been explaining for years. Eastern medicine has focused on the emotional relationship of the organs, and in many illnesses, successful treatment of conditions and ailments lie in the awareness and resolution of emotional issues. Incorporating ancient healing modalities including such as Acupuncture, Ayurveda (diet, herbs and yoga) and Pranayama (breathing exercises), we can really begin to start understanding how the physical and energetic body are connected.
