Shifting Your Health Paradigm

THE VERY PARADIGM of our healthcare system is wrong and needs to change. The conventional medical view, supported by the medical-industrial complex, is that the body comprises isolated parts and that doctors must treat symptoms. Because of this, the economics of healthcare in the US is DRIVEN by sickness, not health. But the body is an integrated whole: every part of the body is related to every other part of the body in a constant interplay of functions and processes. This current healthcare system is a failure because it focuses on the symptoms instead of causes.
Most people judge how healthy they are by how they feel. This seems logical, but unfortunately a person can have late stage cancer or heart disease and still feel great with no symptoms. Nearly everyone has heard of someone who felt fine, only to find out they had serious health problems or disease. The fact is that how you feel has little to nothing to do with how healthy you are. The first step to obtaining true health is learning what health really is.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as a state of 100% function, and not simply the absence of symptoms or a diagnosis. Function dictates Health.

Therefore health is measured by how well you are functioning, not how you are feeling. The nervous system controls ALL function in the body. Discovering how your nervous system is functioning is the first step to restoring and maintaining your health.
Treating symptoms is like taking the batteries out of the smoke alarm instead of putting out the fire. You might not hear the noise any longer but the fire is still there.
We talk about getting results faster, but what are the RIGHT results? It’s important to seek a state of healthy function instead of healthy feeling. If someone focuses on how they feel, they often think when they feel better, they are now healthy and they abandon the changes they made to feel better. This causes not only a loss of the progress they made, but also gives the disease process more time to worsen.

All of this talk of feelings, function, health, and disease is critically important when it relates to our overall well being and our true level of health. Feelings are a terrible gauge of our true health. Many people have experienced debilitating pain that simply turned out to be just gas, and many people have also felt completely fine just before receiving a life-threatening diagnosis. Our feelings are just not reliable when it comes to our health.

How our body functions, however, is a great way to measure our true health. When things are working as they should and we are experiencing optimal levels of function, then we’ve achieved real and lasting health. As with anything, though, our health must be maintained and attended to. But how do we know that our bodies are functioning well? By checking, testing and caring for the system that controls ALL FUNCTION in the body: The Nervous System.

Since the spine houses and protects the nervous system, it’s the most important STRUCTURE in the body. Damage and misalignment of the spine, called Subluxation, causes damage to the nervous system.

Therefore: Structure dictates your Function and Function dictates your Health. This is why it is imperative to correct the subluxation within your nervous system if you want to remain healthy for a lifetime!

Treating a symptom and not its cause is like putting a picture over a hole created by termites. You no longer see the hole, but the termites are still there, eating away, and if we leave it there long enough, they will completely destroy the entire house. If we don’t want to fall into this trap, we need to change the way we think about our approach to health care. When your body is functioning at its highest level, you will have fewer instances of illness, pain, and injury. But it’s far more than that—you can live with the highest level of health and truly thrive, feeling your best and knowing your body is working at its best. Chiropractic care not only reduces instances of dysfunction and pain, but it also improves your overall health and helps you maintain it.
