Nutrigenomics Holds the Keys?

Nutrigenomics is an emerging field of natural medicine focused on studying the effects food has on genetic expression–something like a sub-field of epigenetics, which studies how lifestyle in general affects genetic expression–except nutrigenomics focuses solely on diet. This means that nutrigenomics is targeting research focused on identifying and understanding molecular-level interactions between nutrition found in food and supplements and other dietary additives with your genome. Nutrigenomics has also been described by the influence of genetic variation on nutrition, by correlating genetic expression with a nutrient’s absorption, metabolism, elimination or biological effects once consumed. By doing so, nutrigenomics aims to develop rational means to optimize nutrition recommendations with respect to the individual’s genotype and desired genetic expression. For example: Dietary intake guidelines directly affecting expression of your “good and bad genes.”

By determining the mechanism of the effects of nutrients or the effects of a nutritional regime, nutrigenomics’ goal as a field is to define the causality or relationship between these specific nutrients and specific nutrient regimes (diets) to human disease. Nutrigenomics has also been associated with the idea of personalized nutrition based on genotype. Currently nutrigenomics is aimed at developing an understanding of how the whole body responds to a food via research into the effect of a single gene/single food compound relationships is known as nutrigentics.

TRANSLATION: What you eat and drink can turn off or turn on your genes!

Nutrigenomics is a branch of nutritional genomics and is the study of the effects of foods and food constituents on gene expression. Genes can determine the function but nutrition, what you eat or drink, has the ability to modify the expression of the genes!

Nutrigenomics Example: Breast Cancer

There is so much controversy around the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene that if you have these genes, you are more likely to get breast cancer. The Cancer Industry has trained so many people to believe that if you have a certain gene then you will get cancer! That is old outdated thinking! The percentage of breast cancer cases that are due to BRCA1 mutations is estimated at 3.5-6.2 percent and 2.1-3.4 per- cent for BRCA2 mutations.*

Here is what the National Cancer Institute said about the BRCA1 and BRCA 2 gene mutations:

“It is important to note, however, that most research related to BRCA1 and BRCA2 has been done on large families with many individuals affected by cancer. Estimates of breast and ovarian cancer risk associated with BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations have been calculated from studies of these families. Because family members share a proportion of their genes and, often, their environment, it is possible that the large number of cancer cases seen in these families may be due in part to other genetic or environmental factors.”

What they are saying is, having the gene doesn’t mean you will end up with cancer, that the number of cancer cases may be due to environmental factors as well! Hmm? Why aren’t they teaching this and instead just cutting the organs out? Especially when there is a new field of medicine whose entire existence is based on the idea that certain nutrients (and chemical toxins in foods) directly impact and dictate the expression of our genes!

Nutrigenomics Case Study:

A recent study demonstrated that the higher the cruciferous vegetable intake, the lower the risk for women with a breast cancer-associated genetic mutation.**

The reason why women with BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation cut of their breasts or ovaries is purely out of fear and lack of knowledge. They (mostly because of what their doctors are telling them) believe those tissues are hormonal organs and thus more susceptible to a disruption in hormone imbalance leading to cancer. But what these women aren’t told is that there are many other hormonal organs that are still susceptible–fat cells, pancreas, adrenal glands, thyroid and others. (You don’t hear anyone saying I had to have all my fat, pancreas and thyroid taken out to prevent cancer do you?).

Knowing that your environment determines whether a gene is turned on or off and that nutrition alone has an effect on the gene expression of the cell, it is DRASTICALLY important that you know whether what you are eating & drinking is killing and preventing cancer and not CAUSING it!
