The Other Side of Healing: Are You Living to Perform At Your Best? By Dr. Chris Demczar, DC, CSCS

First off, I want to take a moment to say THANK YOU! I have been working at Cornerstone Health for a little over 7 months now, and I have been amazed at how accepting all of you have been. I have seen at other practices how difficult it can be to integrate a new doctor into a chiropractic practice, and my transition in was so smooth because of your acceptance. This journey is just beginning, there is a lot in store for you guys, so be ready, keep adapting, healing, connecting, and thriving in life!

There is a big reason that we set goals with patients here in our office. You may remember us asking you, “what do you want to be able to do in your life”, or “what could be done if you didn’t have problem x, y, or z”? Patients who set goals are held accountable to those goals and those who follow through with their goals will always have the best experience, not only with their chiropractic care, but in life!

That’s because, if you think about, you see both sides of the pendulum. On one side, you’re under care and making changes to your life (whether related to chiropractic or not) because you want to heal from some illness, or better your health to be more optimal than it currently is. If these are your goals, this is great! We want these changes for you too. But I want to challenge you to push those goals further.

Because on the other side of the pendulum is the opportunity to perform. You may wonder, perform at what? And that is where you need to bring in your imagination, and just as we look to make neurological change with an adjustment, be ready to accept further change in your mindfulness so that you can start your performance.

My favorite quote is “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.”-Marianne Williamson

The reason I love this quote so much is that it speaks to why we choose to limit ourselves. Why we choose to only heal, instead of going on to do something that, even to ourselves, is unexpectedly amazing. We should be waking up every day conquering the light that is already inside of us.

Here is a simple example, maybe one that many of you have realized. Before starting care, you may have simply wanted to get the pain in your neck to be resolved. That pain was limiting your sleep, which was draining your energy during the day, and getting rid of that pain would help to bring that energy back so you could enjoy time with your family. This is good, but let’s add a little extra to it so that we can swing the pendulum to perform. That is, what if by improving the neural pathways in your neck and healing the structural changes that led to the pain in your neck, your range of motion is restored, and now you decide that you’re ready to take your family to go go-kart racing every weekend, which is a passion of your child’s. Now you’re not only enjoying the time with your family, but your helping improves the experience of your child, helping them to pursue their passions. In the future, that child will go on to work an amazing and fulfilling career in Nascar, which was all fueled by your willingness to not only heal, but to go perform on the track!

Now, can you see the difference between the two mindsets? Ask yourself, are you willing to explore what life could be, and grow out of the healing only mindset to the heal and perform mindset? Remember, do not let the light inside of you stay dimly lit, and never explode to influence you and the outside world in amazing ways. Chiropractic care, in combination with functional healing practices, will allow you to explore and find how you can perform in your life. I want to leave you with a few statistics:

  • Individuals who write their goals down are 20% more likely to accomplish them
  • 90% of individuals who set relevant, but challenging goals will have more success achieving them
  • As you are working towards your goals, you are twice as likely to achieve success if you receive feedback about how you’re doing. This is a part of the reason that we re-examine your chiropractic and nutritional health, so that we can help you towards healing, and even more towards performing in life.

So, with this all said, it may be helpful for you to write down your goals for the next 90 days. Use the space below and share them with us before you close this page!
