Vitamin D Leads The Battle Against Viruses

Did you know that according to National Geographic there are an estimated 10-Nonillion (10 to the 31stpower) viruses on planet earth. Viruses have been causing health issues since the beginning of time-even before we knew that viruses existed. While conventional medicine, Big-Pharma and now our government want us to believe the only way we can combat a virus is to increase our hygiene practices, use personal protection devices and ensure our immune system is vaccine boosted, let’s look at a viral protection system that has been around since the beginning of your time-your body’s ability to produce and utilize Vitamin D.

Most individuals will say they are quite familiar with the importance of Vitamin D for your skeletal system(bone and teeth health etc). But did you know that Vitamin D is is also an essential part of your immune response to viral infections!

Take a look at what Sept 2020 article Published in the journal “Nutrients” says about vitamin D? ”

Recent evidence has indicated that vitamin D also plays an essential role in the immune response against viral infections and suggests that vitamin D deficiency increases susceptibility to viral infections as well as the risk of recurrent infections. For instance, low serum vitamin D levels were linked to increased occurrence of high burdens viral diseases such as hepatitis, influenza, Covid-19, and AIDS. Did you catch that? Low vitamin D levels are associated with INCREASED likelihood towards viral infections. Thus, a normal/high level of Vitamin D would be associate with DECREASED likelihood of infection.

Even though numerous of studies have highlighted the importance of vitamin D and your immune system/vital resistance, it has not been fully incorporated into mainstream medicine. If you don’t believe me simply google “Vitamin D and COVID” and be prepared to read article after article suggesting that low vitamin D is what drives infection, severity and even mortality outcomes of COVID.

How Do I Know If My Vitamin D Levels Are Adequate For Strong Immunity? The only way to know if your body has the needed amount of Vitamin D is through direct blood testing but this comes with a warning. Most labs, including Quest and LabCorp have skewed ranges for what is considered normal.

According to the Institute of Medicine and the Endocrine Society there are two ranges

  • Severe Vitamin D Deficiency-any blood value less than20 ng/mL
  • Moderate Vitamin D Deficiency-any blood value between 21-29 ng/mL according to conventional medicine any blood value 30 ng/mL or higher is considered healthy.

However, you need to understand that vitamin D levels can go as high as 100ng/mL and still be considered within normal range medically! This should come as a shock as I imagine you can see one person with a value of 35 ng/mL is vastly different than another with 85 ng/mL yet both are considered “healthy.”

In functional medicine we define vitamin D levels differently based heavily on what research shows can happen when vitamin D levels are higher than 50 ng/mL

  • Severe Vitamin D Deficiency any blood value less than 40 ng/mL-Moderate Vitamin D Deficiency-any blood value between 40-50 ng/mL-Optimal Vitamin D-any blood value over 50ng/mL
  • Moderate Vitamin D Deficiency-any blood value between 40-50 ng/mL
  • Optimal Vitamin D-any blood value over 50ng/mL

Why Do You Need A Plasma Vitamin D3 Level Above 50 ng/mL

Have you seen the article that was just published on MedRxIV.org on 9/25/21 which was titled “COVID-19 mortality risk correlates inversely with vitamin D3 status, and a mortality rate close to zero could theoretically be achieved at50 ng/ml 25(OH)D3”.
The title alone suggests why! Look at what authors Borsche, Glauner and Von Mendel said…

“Despite ongoing vaccinations, we recommend raising serum 25(OH)D levels to
above 50 ng/ml to prevent or mitigate new outbreaks due to escape mutations or decreasing antibody activity.” (Article Source)

Vitamin D doesn’t just help your body against coronavirus, remember the 10-Nonillion viruses we spoke about earlier-your body knows how to create an immune reaction to any virus that it gets exposed to and your vitamin D levels determine the strength of that reaction AND your bodies response to the infection.
