Your Brain Wants To Heal You! Will You Let It?

Your spine is an extremely important part of your body, perhaps more important than other areas you place high importance/value (heart, lungs, liver etc). This is simply due to the fact that your spine, comprised of the bones of your vertebral column, protect your spinal cord-a very small structure that makes every cell, tissue and organ in you work! You spinal cord is ~45 cm (only 18 in length) in men and ~43 cm (17 in long) long in women and approximately 1-1.5 cm in diameter (that’s only about 0.5”holding an estimated 100 Billion nerve fibers!)

When it comes down to it, the spinal column essentially provides two major functions for the physical body. It keeps the entire body upright, balanced, and stable and it also protects the central nervous system, which needs sufficient protection so it can provide a very important service to the body–regulating communication between the body and the brain. When you start to think about it the spinal column is a literal “root” or “stem” of all bodily functions. Hopefully after reading this article, you will agree with me that your spine needs some love, care and attention on a regular basis! Unfortunately, it can be surprisingly easy to bring about injury to the spinal column and even the smallest injury can result in a massive detriment (numbness, paralysis or organ failure).

Just about everything you do can hurt the spine (sleeping, sitting, standing, walking, thinking) and it’s even been shown that your diet has an effect on your spine. Small injuries are often manifested in the form of vertebral subluxations, which are misalignments in the spinal column that lead to a decrease in nerve signaling. These misalignments could cause back pain, muscle stiffness, headaches, sleep disorders, digestive troubles but most often they go unnoticed (95% of spinal issues have no pain associated with them) and lead to deeper health issues such as diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, fatty liver, hypothyroidism, acid reflux and more!. Taking care not to injury your back is just as important as you investing in your spinal hygiene and adjusting therapies.

Two Ways To Fix A Brain-Nerve Problem:

What boggles my mind is the extremely high prevalence of back pain, neck pain, headaches, and other musculoskeletal problems in the US and the obvious benefit chiropractic care could offer to solve the problems. Whether you are newly experiencing lower back pain, have an ailing neck, or are faced with chronic health issues, the need for quick and effective solutions to your problem(s) is always connected to finding the root cause.

There are two main approaches when it comes to the correction of musculoskeletal problems (or any health issue for that matter). Some people prefer to seek traditional, conventional, medical care, using their primary care medical doctor for a referral to a physical therapist, orthopedist or neurologist and the eventual seeking of pain medication. Others prefer an alternative approach, using chiropractic care to avoid pain medication and surgery. Knowing that these are the two main approaches to managing musculoskeletal pain, researchers have committed to determining which oft he two may help more.

Is There Evidence For Chiropractic Care?

This is the number one argument I hear when talking with the medical community-we would/could believe in chiropractic but there are simply no studies to prove it works. Really? I guess they are looking in medical journals (that’s like looking for a 2020 Lexus at a Ford dealer if you ask me!)

A four-year study published and presented at the Research Agenda Conference (RAC) in March 2003 compared the experiences of 1.7 million patients in a California managed-care plan: 1 million members without chiropractic coverage and 700,000 with chiropractic coverage. Patients were divided into six groups, based on whether they enjoyed chiropractic coverage and whether they received chiropractic or medical care for their neuromusculoskeletal (NMS) conditions.
Total health-care costs – Patients with chiropractic coverage experienced 12% lower costs than care provided to patients with medical therapies. Low-back pain treatment episodes–Patients withchiropractic coverage experienced 28% lower costs than patients who received medical care.
Fewer inpatients stays – Patients with chiropractic coverage experienced 9.3 stays per 1000 patients versus 15.6 stays per 1000 patients for those with medical care.
Fewer MRIs – Patients with chiropractic coverage experienced 43.2 MRIs per 1000 patients, versus 68.9 MRIs per 1000 for those under medical care.
Fewer low-back surgeries – Patients with chiropractic coverage experienced 3.3 low-back surgeries per 1000 patients, versus 4.3 surgeries per 1000 patients for those under medical care. According to Dr. Nelson, these findings could translate into a $47.5 million savings over four years for the 1.7 million member managed-care plan, if all 1.7 million members were provided with chiropractic coverage.(Imagine how this could impact our nation if all 330 M Americans received chiropractic care!!!)
Ok, so this was one very large study which showed chiropractic offered a wide arrange of improvements over medical care. What about “hard cases?” Here are a few articles you should consider:
Resolution of type 2 diabetes Mellitus in a patient undergoing Sublaxation Based Chiropractic Care And Dietary Restricitions: ( A case study of diabetes in a 61 year old man who was on insulin and medication for 40+ years. His diabetes resolved after 1 month of care.)
Reduction in Arterial Blood Pressure Following Adjustment of Atlas to Correct Vertebral Subluxation: (A group of 20 people had significantly lowered blood pressure at both 4 and 6 weeks checkups after having a chiropractic adjustment performed.)
Resolution of Hypothyroidism & Improved Cervical Curve in a 52-Year-Old Female Undergoing Chiropractic Care for Vertebral Subluxation: (A 52 year old who was able to stop her thyroid medications which she had been on for many years after 9 months of chiropractic care.)
Resolution of Irritable Bowel Symptomatology in a Patient Undergoing Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care: (A 32 year old patient with 10+ years of IBS had 100% resolution of bowel symptoms AND her anxiety and depression also resolved with chiropractic care.)
Reduction in the use of Opioids for Pain with Chiropractic Care: (a combined 62,000 patients over multiple studies showed that people who received chiropractic care were 64% less likely to use opioids than those seeking medical care!)
These are just a handful of thousands of articles that have been published on the benefits of chiropractic care and the ability for your brain, central nervous system and spinal nerves to offer significant improvement in helping your body to heal itself.

Warning: There are many types of chiropractic care, and not all are created equal. While there are hundreds of types of medical doctors, the good news is there are only two types of Chiropractors–subluxation based and non-subluxation based. The easiest way to find out what type of chiropractor you are possibly going to see is to ask them one simple question:
  • “Does subluxation cause disease like hypothyroidism, autoimmune conditions, asthma, allergies, heart disease, diabetes cancer etc?
  • ”If they say “YES!” then you are speaking with a subluxation based chiropractor. Then you simply needto ask them–“how do you determine if my spine has a subluxation and that it has been reduced or corrected after therapy?
  • They should say “by spinal thermography, digital x-ray and orthopedic evaluation/palpation which we will do not only on your initial exam but also on every subsequent exam you have with our office.”
  • If they say anything other than that or “subluxation isn’t proven to exist in science”, “you only need to see a chiropractor when you are in pain” or “we don’t take x-rays as they are not needed for your condition or the type of chiropractic we provide” you are speaking with a non-subluxation based chiropractor.
As you can see with the articles above, its SUBLUXATION BASED CHIROPACTIC that offers the greatest healing benefits to you and your body. Remove the interference in the spine/nerve system and the body will heal itself–it happens no other way.
