Mia was born 12/13/22 at the Natural Beginnings Birth Center in Statesville, NC. She and her parents left 4 hours later. It was the best start to life you could ask for. If you want an uncomplicated, natural birth that is handled by true birthing midwives and professionals, tell your friends and family about Natural Beginnings.
Why were allowed to leave after only 4 hours, you may be wondering? Because mom and baby were healthy. This means that mom gets her vitals heading towards a resting state, and baby passes its first meconium (baby poop), latches and has its first feed, and has stable vitals one hour after birth. That is all that is needed from a reactive, medical approach to birth.
From a proactive thought process, Mia had her first chiropractic adjustment about 2 hours after birth. She wasn’t the biggest fan, probably because she was also practicing latching with a small tongue tie that was keeping her a bit hungry at that point. But Mia’s tailbone was shifted during the birth process, meaning that the nerves going to her gut, her pelvis, and her legs and feet were obstructed.
This also meant lots of stress up and down her spinal cord, which could have affected any cellular function in her body. All that neurological stress, removed with one specific adjustment. The biggest blessing is knowing that this baby, my daughter will start her life on earth without any of that neurological stress in the way.
As you know, health is now a lifelong journey, full of toxins that can disrupt Mia, you, and the millions of other babies that are and will be born. So let’s take a look at some of the different things in a babies life, and how you can implement a toxin free life for your loved one.
Diapers – You may be changing a diaper 8-10 times a day in some cases. There is no way to get out of the need to have something to catch your babies waste in, but what you use can have a massive effect on their health. For health purposes, the best option will always be the cloth diaper. It is not the cleanest option, but it will always be the healthiest for the one thing that will constantly be in contact with your babies skin.
To take the cloth diaper to the next level, their are cloth and even better bamboo liners that you can put in the diaper to help absorb waste and provide the healthiest barrier to your baby. Check out cloth diapers at Earth and Eden or at HealthyBaby. If you need some bamboo liners, those can be found at Modibodi. Believe Diapers has bamboo diapers if you really want to up your game!
One note on diaper rashes; they should never happen! A diaper rash is an allergic reaction, most of the time to the chlorine in the diapers or some other toxin. Eliminate the toxin, and stop the diaper rash. You shouldn’t ever need to put another chemical on your babies most sensitive areas to stop an allergic reaction from happening.
Wipes – ensure you are using plant based wipes, and avoid alcohol based wipes touching your baby. Honest brand does a decent job here.
Soaps – This one is pretty straight forward. Stay away from fragrances (parfum, lavender, etc.), harsh cleaners (SLS/SLES), and other additives. You really only need pure soap. Dr. Bronner’s makes a decent product for babies. On a more interesting note, have you ever seen a babies skin when it is born? It is covered in a white cheese-like substance called vermix. This is a protective coating that will absorb and nourish your babies skin once it is exposed to air. Do not wash it off! On average, a hospital washes a newborn within the first 6 hours after birth. This can destroy the natural barrier the babies body has to protect itself. When did Mia get her first bath? Day 7.
Food/Formula – If your feathers get ruffled here, good! Because the truth is, “BREAST IS BEST!” If you are unable to breast feed, there are other options to assist getting baby their nutrition, but no formula will ever come close to being as good as moms breast milk.
You might think, well what about other moms milk. True, and there is a breast milk bank program through Wake Forest that you can take advantage of in North Carolina. The one flaw is that a mothers milk will change to suit the needs of her baby. Does the baby need more fat? Their mothers milk will innately add more fats into the milk. It is the most beautiful thing!
If breast milk is still not an option, we have the secret recipe at CHC! This would be the next best option. It is about 15 ingredients that you can put together to closely mimic breast milk. If you are set on using formula, regulations are way stricter in Europe, and thus, better quality formulas exist over there. Check out My Organic Company for the best formulas in the business (stick to goat milk formulations).
Clothes – It should be no surprise that organic cotton and bamboo are best for babies. But if organic isn’t possible, look for the OEKO-TEX 100 certification. This means that the clothing is made free of 100 harmful chemicals, making it safer to wear for baby.
