The Bible has a lot to teach us about nearly every conceivable facet of our lives. And that includes what and how we eat. References are made to medicinal properties of foods and herbs numerous of times as health and longevity are divinely ours (if we so choose). The Bible is very clear on Clean vs. Unclean – and before you say “Oh, thats the Old Testament” or “Didn’t they eat wheat in Jesus’s day?”, follow this advice for a four-week stint and you might just see the miracle you were looking for.
Biblical Clean Foods:
- Anything that grows on or in a tree: Seed bearing, mostly fruits or anything that grows on a vine
- Any seed bearing plants: beans, tomato, squash, etc.
- Any field plant: leafy vegetables, herbs and roots
- Birds: Any winged animal other than those listed as unclean (see below)
- Insects: Any without wings
- Seafood: Anything with BOTH fins AND scales
- “Clean” Meats: Only animals whose hoof is cloven in two AND chews the cud, i.e., ox, cattle, buffalo, sheep, deer, gazelle, antelope, mountain sheep
Biblical Un-Clean Foods:
- “Un-Clean” Meats: Pigs, camel, hare, badger
- Shellfish: Any sea animal with a shell (shrimp, lobster, crab) or those that do not have fins and scales (octopus, squid, whale, etc.)
- Birds: Eagle, vulture, kite, raven, ostrich, seagull, owl and bats (though not technically a bird, the Bible categorizes bats with “winged animals.”)
- Insects: All insects with wings
Biblical changes in dietary recommendations over time
Before “The Flood” and Noah, it’s interesting to note the ages of some of the Bibles main characters:
- Methuselah – 969
- Jared – 962
- Enos – 955
- Noah – 950
- Adam – 930
- Seth – 912
- Cainan – 910
- Lamech – 777
These men ate primarily vegetarian diets as directed by God in Genesis 1:20: “Then God said, ‘I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.”
They also followed the “After Eden Diet” described in Genesis 3:17: “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life.”
Noah ushered in a new era for humanity when the Ark landed on Mount Ararat. Because the earth had been completely submerged in water, there were no edible plants and as God had blessed Noah to be fruitful and multiply, He also gave man the instruction to begin eating animals in Genesis 9:3: “Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.”
Of interesting note, the maximum lifespan of humans began to diminished from 1,000 to 120 years at that point. (Was that because of the introduction of animals into our diet or simply God’s plan? There is only one way to find out, but then you wouldn’t be reading this newsletter… wink, wink.)
Regardless, you can see that there are clear instructions for what we are supposed to eat by design. Here is a list of the Biblical foods that have been mentioned and I hope this article inspires you to add them to your diet if you have never had the pleasure of tasting them.
Top Biblical Healing & Longevity Foods
- Olives and Olive Oil: Deuteronomy 6:10-11: “…vineyards & olive trees you did not plant – then when you eat and are satisfied.” – Olive oil has been shown to help almost any condition – from heart to brain and even skin and joint health.
- Pomegranates & Figs: Deuteronomy 8:7-8 – “For the Lord your God is brining you into a good land.. a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees & pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey.” Pomegranates and Figs not only taste great but have been shown to be loaded with various phytonutrients that are anti-cancerous, anti-inflammatory and even anti-obesity.
- Fermented Grapes: Song of Solomon 1:2 – “May he kiss me with the kisses of his mouth! For your love is better than wine.” – This is a touchy subject, but even Jesus turned water into wine. Studies today do show that limited alcohol intake, specifically red wine, may help to lower mortality and prevent heart disease. Today’s wine is extremely toxic with added chemicals and even Roundup. If you chose to drink wine, please make sure it’s not from the U.S., and is tested to be free of toxins like Dry Farm Wines.
- Flax: Proverbs 31: 10,13 – “An excellent wife who can find, For her worth is far above jewels.. she looks for wool & flax and works with her hands in delight.” – Flax seeds have been shown to be high in the essential fatty acids that help prevent cancer, heart disease, diabetes and lung disease.
- Sprouted Grain Bread: Ezekiel 4:9 – “Take wheat and barley, beans and lentils, millet and spelt; put them in a storage jar and use them to make bread for yourself.” Sprouted grains are easier to digest and while the “today” version of wheat is toxic with added gluten, original breads of the biblical era were extremely healing. If you are not sensitive to wheat, this is the preferred bread and it’s even available today as “Ezekiel bread.”
- Goat Milk: Proverbs 27:26-27 – “The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are the price of the field. And thou shalt have goats’ milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, and for the maintenance for thy maidens.” – Goats milk is unique in that it has more calcium, K2, magnesium, phosphorus and fat soluble vitamins along with easier to digest proteins than cows milk suggesting it was the preferred “milk” of the Biblical era.
- Lamb: Exodus 12:11 – “Now you shall eat it (the unblemished lamb) in this manner; with your loins girded, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste – it is the Lord’s Passover.”
- Bitter Herbs: Exodus 12:8 – “They shall eat the flesh that same night, roasted with fire and they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs” – Not familiar with bitter herbs? Coriander and parsley fall into this group and are loaded with powerful antioxidants and even detoxification power.
- Vegetables: Daniel 1:12 – “Please test your servants for ten days and let us be given some vegetables to eat and water to drink” – As you know, Daniel and his men out-performed the king’s men (who ate meats and rich foods).
- Raw Honey: Proverbs 25: 16 – “Have you found honey? Eat only what you need that you not have it in excess and vomit.” – Even God knew too much of a good thing can be dangerous. This is a “Biblical Low Carb” warning.
