Your spine is an extremely important part of your body, perhaps more important than other areas you place high importance/value (heart, lungs, liver etc). This is simply due to the fact that your spine, comprised of the bones of your vertebral column, protect your spinal cord-a very small structure that makes every cell, tissue and organ in you work! You spinal cord is ~45 cm (only 18 in length) in men and ~43 cm (17 in long) long in women and approximately 1-1.5 cm in diameter (that’s only about 0.5”holding an estimated 100 Billion nerve fibers!)
When it comes down to it, the spinal column essentially provides two major functions for the physical body. It keeps the entire body upright, balanced, and stable and it also protects the central nervous system, which needs sufficient protection so it can provide a very important service to the body–regulating communication between the body and the brain. When you start to think about it the spinal column is a literal “root” or “stem” of all bodily functions. Hopefully after reading this article, you will agree with me that your spine needs some love, care and attention on a regular basis! Unfortunately, it can be surprisingly easy to bring about injury to the spinal column and even the smallest injury can result in a massive detriment (numbness, paralysis or organ failure).
Just about everything you do can hurt the spine (sleeping, sitting, standing, walking, thinking) and it’s even been shown that your diet has an effect on your spine. Small injuries are often manifested in the form of vertebral subluxations, which are misalignments in the spinal column that lead to a decrease in nerve signaling. These misalignments could cause back pain, muscle stiffness, headaches, sleep disorders, digestive troubles but most often they go unnoticed (95% of spinal issues have no pain associated with them) and lead to deeper health issues such as diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, fatty liver, hypothyroidism, acid reflux and more!. Taking care not to injury your back is just as important as you investing in your spinal hygiene and adjusting therapies.
Two Ways To Fix A Brain-Nerve Problem:
What boggles my mind is the extremely high prevalence of back pain, neck pain, headaches, and other musculoskeletal problems in the US and the obvious benefit chiropractic care could offer to solve the problems. Whether you are newly experiencing lower back pain, have an ailing neck, or are faced with chronic health issues, the need for quick and effective solutions to your problem(s) is always connected to finding the root cause.
There are two main approaches when it comes to the correction of musculoskeletal problems (or any health issue for that matter). Some people prefer to seek traditional, conventional, medical care, using their primary care medical doctor for a referral to a physical therapist, orthopedist or neurologist and the eventual seeking of pain medication. Others prefer an alternative approach, using chiropractic care to avoid pain medication and surgery. Knowing that these are the two main approaches to managing musculoskeletal pain, researchers have committed to determining which oft he two may help more.
Is There Evidence For Chiropractic Care?
- “Does subluxation cause disease like hypothyroidism, autoimmune conditions, asthma, allergies, heart disease, diabetes cancer etc?
- ”If they say “YES!” then you are speaking with a subluxation based chiropractor. Then you simply needto ask them–“how do you determine if my spine has a subluxation and that it has been reduced or corrected after therapy?
- They should say “by spinal thermography, digital x-ray and orthopedic evaluation/palpation which we will do not only on your initial exam but also on every subsequent exam you have with our office.”
- If they say anything other than that or “subluxation isn’t proven to exist in science”, “you only need to see a chiropractor when you are in pain” or “we don’t take x-rays as they are not needed for your condition or the type of chiropractic we provide” you are speaking with a non-subluxation based chiropractor.
